A winner of 8 Tony Awards including BEST MUSICAL, Hairspray is set to stage in Manila, following a hugely successful run in Broadway and London's West End.

Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, with a book by Mark O'Donnel and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Hairspray follows the fortunes, or misfortunes, of the heavy-set Tracy Turnblad, who is determined to become a star dancer on the Corny Collins TV pop show.

In 2007, Hairspray was remade into a musical film starring John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Von Tussle, Queen Latifah as "Motormouth" Maybelle and introducing Nikki Blonsky as the pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad.

MICHAEL DE MESA, one of the handful local actors who can rightfully claim to be called such, will be playing a woman on-stage. She—rather—he will essay the role of Edna Turnblad in Atlantis Productions’ version of the hilarious Tony Award-winning musical Hairspray.

You might have seen the successful and successfully rousing 2007 movie version topbilled by John Travolta (as Edna Turnblad), Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Zac Efron and Amanda Bynes, among others, so the pressure on de Mesa could be gargantuan.

Travolta’s act is a tough one to follow. More so, Turnblad is a fat woman.

“I can say that this is the most difficult part I’ve gotten to play. It’s physically demanding not only in terms of singing and dancing. Yes, it’s hard, kasi, kumbaga I have to give the illusion that it’s not a fat suit, that it’s really me, that it’s how my body is built,” he tells the BusinessMirror.

He adds that he will soon shave all hair visible to the audience. And that includes his arms, legs, face and chest. He actually asked for the role as early as last year, when Atlantis was doing Dogeaters, which de Mesa was part of.

Why Turnblad?

“Ako naman, whatever comes my way. I’m always at home doing theater. This is something for the soul. After doing all those soaps, you know what I mean.”

He adds that it’s the reason he accepts roles in low-budgeted indie films and in theater. He recounts the first play he did in 1981, titled Bangag, directed by Leo Martinez. It was the local adaptation of a Broadway hit, Does A Tiger Wear A Necktie?, which launched the career of then-unknown Al Pacino.

“When I read the script of Bangag, I fell in love with it and I offered myself to Leo. After that, I kept on doing theater, all straight plays. Rent was the first musical I did. I fell in love with it when I saw it in Broadway, and so when I learned that it was going to be staged here, I auditioned. When I saw Hairspray, I wanted to do it at once. That’s why I told Bobby earlier, even when we were doing Dogeaters.”

He feels very much blessed as an actor because he can do everything, whether in films or television. As a stage actor, he is both comfortable with musical and straight plays. His other theater forays that easily come to mind include Once on This Island, Proof, Tick Tick…Boom and The Rocky Horror Show.

As an actor for films and television, we’re all aware that he has played both hero and antihero, tatay and tito to the likes of Judy Ann Santos and Claudine Barretto.

“I’ve been given the chance to do all kinds of roles and I’m glad for the opportunities,” he says, shaking his head, as if holding back something.

And there’s one more thing he feels inadequate in: dancing. We remember him joining the dancing contest on TV, the one hosted by Lucy Torres-Gomez (Shall We Dance on the old ABC). One of the judges told him, “You know, Michael, you’re a very good actor. No doubt about that. But please, don’t act while dancing. Your body movements tell us you’re acting the dance. Why don’t you just enjoy the music and dance?”

Ouch. Now for Hairspray, his role has many dancing parts.

“Let’s just say I’m practicing a lot,” de Mesa assures us. It is not news anymore that de Mesa’s marriage to Gina Alajar was annulled a couple of years ago, and his current squeeze is a professional dancer, a veteran member of Hotlegs. So does he ask advice from her?

“No, I want to surprise her. I ask tips but I don’t show her what I do,” de Mesa says, grinning, with a newfound satisfaction. There’s more to smile about for him. He confesses that he has decided to embark on a new chapter in his professional life. After Hairspray, he will be leaving show biz for a longer time for a full-time marketing job in California. He will be selling ambulances.

“It’s been offered to me since 2006 pa. It’s an opportunity I’ve been wanting to grab a long time ago. I am 48 and I’m not getting any younger. I want to explore na rin what I’m capable of aside from acting.”

He also uses the term “very frustrated” with the way things are being run in local show biz nowadays. He compares the palakasan system and widespread mediocrity among the recent crop—or, crap?—of so-called actors, like some sort of airborne virus attacking and killing a helpless victim.

Then again, he is always generous enough to give advice to the “victims.” Or those TV-film actors trying to venture into theater

“Always be serious with the craft. Respect the work. Acting is not just what you see on soap operas. There’s more to that.”

For his swan song in local theater, de Mesa will be joined in by much-awarded singer Dulce, who will play Motor Mouth Maybelle (done by Queen Latifah in the film). Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo plays the villain Velma Von Tussle (essayed by Pfeiffer in the movie). Nyoy Volante will play Seaweed J. Stubbs. There’s also Leo Rialp (Wilbur Turnblad), Gabe Mercado (The Male Authority Figure), Enchang Kaimo (Female Authority Figure) and Noel Rayos (Corny Collins).

For the lead roles, newbies Madel Ching will play Tracy Turnblad while Tim Espinosa will be Link Larkin (in the film he was Zac Efron).

Hairspray is directed by Garcia with choreographer Cecille Martinez, musical director Archie Castillo (conducting the FILharmoniKA), production designer Gino Gonzales and lighting designer Shoko Matsumoto.

It will be staged at the Star Theater, CCP Complex, from November 14 to December 7.

'Hairspray' : new musical theater stars

MANILA, Philippines - We all saw how the most recent “Hairspray” movie found its adorable Tracy in the person of the very adorable Nikki Blonsky. She was said to have screamed with delight in her barista uniform when she found out she was to play the lead role in the movie. Needless to say, a star was born.

When “Hairspray” debuted on Broadway in 2002, in the cast with the powerhouses were young and upcoming performers Laura Bell Bundy as Amber, Kerri Butler as Penny and Matthew Morrison as Link.

The show went on to win numerous Tony awards, and the young performers went on to become Broadway stars in their own right.

Bundy created the role of Elle Woods in “Legally Blonde.” Butler donned an Australian accent and some leg warmers—much to to the audience’s delight—in “Xanadu.”

Morrison has become one of Broadway’s favorite romantic leads with acclaimed back-to-back turns in “Light in the Piazza” and last year’s Tony-winning revival of “South Pacific.”

Young pack

As Atlantis Productions’ highly anticipated “Hairspray” draws closer and closer to its Manila premiere, one can’t help but wonder at the future some theater newcomers will face after they begin their professional careers with this show.

Until then, they will be busy dancing and singing to the delightful music of “Hairspray.”

Leading the young pack are Madel Ching and Tim Espinosa playing Tracy Turnblad and Link Larkin, respectively.

Madel was a discovery from Ateneo Blue Repertory, where she played the hip-hopping nerd in “High School Musical.” When she auditioned for the role, it was clear that, with her ebullience and cheer and constant state of joy, she was perfect for Tracy.

Tim was one of the members of Star Magic Batch 15 at ABS-CBN, after coming home to the Philippines from the US. Before this, he was training as a dancer and actor with various community groups in California.

Giving strong support to Madel and Tim are the rest of the Baltimore kids: Criena House, Mark Tayag, Christine Allado, Lee Villoria, Erika Cedilla, Michael Odoemene and Karla Reyes.

Largely products of summer workshops and school theater and music organizations, they are brought together by their love for Broadway and affinity for the show. After all, how many shows are there for young performers to be able to perform in and play their own ages?

Madel recalls: “I’ve known ‘Hairspray’ since I was in high school. I fell in love with it, mostly because I identified with Tracy and everything that she stood for. She was a girl who, like me, just wanted to dance, sing and perform for people. So when I heard Atlantis was going to do it in Manila, I knew I couldn’t let the chance pass.”

Challenges

Now that they are all past the audition jitters and are in the thick of rehearsals for the show, the challenges and expectations have grown.

Lee, who plays Little Inez, shares: “Rehearsing for ‘Hairspray’ is wonderful! It’s an honor for me to be working with some of the hardcore theater people of our country.”

The theater stalwarts he’s referring to include Michael de Mesa, Leo Rialp, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Noel Rayos, Enchang Kaimo and Dulce.

Mark says: “Tito Leo once told me, ‘You have to give three times what you’re giving now so your story can reach the very back of the theater.’ And I try to always bear that in mind.”

They also recall the day when Dulce belted her way in and out of her songs and they were just stunned into silence (an unusual occurrence in a room of hyper kids).

Says Tim: “I am learning so much from all of them and not just about performing but more about the values that give performers longevity—perseverance, hard work, discipline and time management.”

Excitement

All rehearsals, of course, must end with a show. And, at this prospect, their excitement is palpable.

Christine says: “All of the elements of musical theater are hyped up and exaggerated to the highest level in ‘Hairspray.’ The singing is intense, the dancing is extreme, the acting is exaggerated (in a good way), the sets are fabulous, the costumes are adorable, and the story is just perfect, really. We promise, at the end of everything, you’ll find yourself giddy and at the edge of your seat because of the euphoria that ‘Hairspray’ brings!”

Acclaimed director Mike Nichols, while teaching an acting class, once said: “The actor’s job is to say his lines for the first time. Each time.”

And if the fine rapture of that first time is what counts, then these young ones are all a good reason to come and watch “Hairspray.”

Likewise, ABS-CBN talent Tim Espinosa marks his stage debut with Hairspray, where he takes on the role of heartthrob Link Larkin (played by Zac Efron in the remake).

Directed by Bobby Garcia, choreographed by Cecile Martinez, and conducted by musical director Archie Castillo, Hairspray tells the story of Tracy, a “pleasantly plump” girl who wins a spot on a local TV dance program and becomes a celebrity overnight. Yet contrary to the recent film, the Hairspray musical is more political, as it tackles issues such as racism more closely. The two-hour show also includes songs from the musical that were not used in the film.

	Musical Theatre sensation and now stage director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo returns to performing as the villainous Velma Von Tussle, played in the film by Michelle Pfeiffer. Menchu has appeared in many shows for Atlantis including PROOF and BABY and recently directed WEST SIDE STORY for STAGES. She continues to be one of the country's most sought after musical theatre actresses.

	Singer/Songwriter Nyoy Volante returns to his theatre roots in HAIRSPRAY where he plays Seaweed J. Stubbs. Nyoy recently released his fifth album entitled HEARTSTRINGS with the hit single BECAUSE. He last appeared on stage alternating with Jett Pangan as James Thunder Early in Atlantis' DREAMGIRLS.

An Award-Winning Musical Director Comes Home

One of the country's most versatile musical directors, Archie Castillo, returns to Manila to conduct FILharmoniKA Orchestra in Atlantis Productions' highly anticipated staging of the hit Tony Award winning musical Hairspray which runs from Nov. 14 to Dec. 7 at Star Theatre, CCP Complex.

Archie has an impressive 18-year track record making him one of the most prolific music directors in the country. As a music director, composer, arranger, record producer and orchestrator for film, TV, musical theater and concerts, Archie has numerous awards and nominations from distinguished Philippine music and film organizations. He earned an international recognition in Finland when he won Best Arrangement at the 1994 International Midnight Song Festival.

FILharmoniKA is the most sought-after orchestra in the country today. The group was formed in 2005 under the leadership of music director Gerard Salonga as the in-house recording ensemble of Carmel House Studios, a music and audio post-production facility in Manila. Their music prowess can be heard on film scores and albums such as the animated feature Tugger starring Jim Belushi, Ang Pamana, and the albums of Lea Salonga, Regine Velasquez, Martin Nievera, Gary Valenciano and Mon David. The orchestra can also be heard on the station IDs of The Filipino Channel and Q-11, as well as major TV commercials. The orchestra's goal is to bring the best of Filipino music to audiences here and abroad. It also wants to introduce new audiences to the magic of orchestral music.

Ever since childhood, Madel has had her fair share of attention – positive and negative, expectant and accepting. She feels that although she may not fall under the conventionally pretty standard, she resorts to other avenues where she can shine. In theater, for example, it’s a different kind of attention.

“One of the reasons why I joined theater is because everyone’s accepted [there],” Madel says in Filipino. “There are different roles [to take on] and not everyone has to be pretty. I like to go into theatre to show people that I can excel in something.”

She recently got the part of Tracy Turnblad in an upcoming rendition of Hairspray, a Broadway musical to be staged by Atlantis Productions at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

The character of Tracy Turnblad has become synonymous with embracing one’s self, without having to dull one’s shine because of other people. “I’m really her,” says Madel. In Hairspray, Madel feels that she will be able to convey an important message. For her, taking on the role is a step closer to encouraging people to accept their bodies.

“Turn your insecurities into something positive,” says Madel. “Avoid thinking, ‘I wish I had this…’ because you can always work on what you have.”

Health and fitness columnist Cory Quirino supports Madel’s positive attitude. “The ideal body image is, as experts say, one that is positive and wholesome,” says Quirino. “For it is only when we look at ourselves in a positive light that we can begin to love ourselves [and] do things for [ourselves] that will uplift, nourish, and strengthen [us].”

Atlantis Productions has gathered a star-studded cast for it's highly anticipated staging of the hit Tony Award winning musical HAIRSPRAY which runs at the Star Theatre, CCP Complex from November 14 to December 7, 2008.

Headlining the cast is award winning film/television/stage actor Michael de Mesa. For the first time in his illustrious career, Michael will be playing a woman on stage as he takes on the role of Edna Turnblad, made famous in the original film by Divine, on Broadway by Harvey Fierstein and in the recent movie musical by John Travolta. Michael has been seen in numerous Atlantis show's such as RENT, PROOF, TICK,TICKÂ…BOOM!, THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW and, most recently, in DOGEATERS.

Multi-awarded singer Dulce plays Motor Mouth Maybelle, a role that Queen Latifah made famous in the movie musical version of HAIRSPRAY. She gets to sing the second act power ballad I KNOW WHERE I'VE BEN. Dulce was last seen on stage in the musical HIMALA, and marks her 30th year in showbiz with her performance in HAIRSPRAY.

Actor/Director Leo Rialp plays Wilbur Turnblad, Edna's loving and devoted husband. Leo continues to juggle directing with performing and last appeared with Atlantis in DOGEATERS and most recently appeared on stage in THE GOLDEN CHILD.

Musical Theatre sensation and now stage director Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo returns to performing as the villainous Velma Von Tussle, played in the film by Michelle Pfeiffer. Menchu has appeared in many shows for Atlantis including PROOF and BABY and recently directed WEST SIDE STORY for STAGES. She continues to be one of the country's most sought after musical theatre actresses.

Singer/Songwriter Nyoy Volante returns to his theatre roots in HAIRSPRAY where he plays Seaweed J. Stubbs. Nyoy recently released his fifth album entitled HEARTSTRINGS with the hit single BECAUSE. He last appeared on stage alternating with Jett Pangan as James Thunder Early in Atlantis' DREAMGIRLS.

Also joining the cast are comedian Gabe Mercado who will be playing numerous roles as The Male Authority Figure, theatre veteran Enchang Kaimo as the Female Authority Figure and Noel Rayos, who returns from Hong Kong Disneyland to play Corny Collins.

It was during a very cold winter in 2002 that I caught Hairspray on Broadway for the first time. And I instantly fell in love with it. Never in my life had I seen a show that exploded with that much joy, happiness and energy. To say that the show brought down the roof of the Neil Simon Theatre would be an understatement. It went on to win eight Tony Awards including Best Musical.

When Broadway Asia asked me if I was interested in the rights for Hairspray for Manila, I immediately jumped at the chance - although I had numerous questions in my head.

Where would I find a young plus-size girl who could sing and dance like there's no tomorrow to play Tracy? Where would I find a distinguished actor with enough musical theater chops and the courage to shave off all body hair and put on a dress to play Edna, the role made famous on stage by Harvey Fierstein and in the recent movie musical by John Travolta? And was there a new generation of singers and dancers ready to take on the demands of one of the most difficult musicals to perform (two and a half hours of wall to wall dancing, for starters)?

We began auditions for the show last April and I was amazed to see over 300 people come in to try out for a part in the show. After several vocal and dance callbacks, we arrived at our cast. Making her professional theater debut is Ateneo student Madel Ching as Tracy Turnblad, one of musical theater's most demanding roles (she's on stage for almost all the scenes). It was clear from the moment she walked into the audition room that she was Tracy. Also making their professional stage debut are Tim Espinosa as Link Larkin and Christine Allado as Amber Von Tussle. I called on my dear friends Michael de Mesa and Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo to take on the roles of Edna Turnblad and Velma Von Tussle. Michael excitedly (and courageously) immediately said yes. And Menchu eagerly accepted to sink her teeth into the villainess role. In their hands, I knew I had leads I could totally rely on. I convinced the terrifically talented Nyoy Volante to return to the stage as Seaweed J. Stubbs after a five-year absence - he last performed as James Thunder Early in DreamGirls. And I only dreamed that Dulce (whom I believe is one of the greatest singers in the world) would agree to play Motormouth Maybelle. It was one of the happiest mornings when I woke up to a text message from her saying she would do it. Joining them are some of the finest performers this country has including Noel Rayos, who returns to us from Hong Kong Disneyland, as Corny Collins; Monica Reynoso as Penny Pingleton; Leo Rialp as Wilbur Turnblad; Gabe Mercado as the Male Authority Figure; Enchang Kaimo as the Female Authority Figure along with a crazy-talented ensemble of youthful singers and dancers.

Seeing the veterans of stage, TV, concerts and recording work hand in hand with the many young performers making their professional theater debut has been quite inspiring. There is a brand new generation of theater artists now, slowly mastering the craft and discipline that theater requires. Seeing them strive for perfection and never settling for mediocrity reaffirm something I have believed in from the very beginning - theater will never die. It is not a dinosaur, as many people like to call it. Theater is not doomed for extinction. It will continue to flourish, and soon in the hands of a new generation.

I have also been extremely fortunate to have a stellar creative team collaborating with me in the show. Cecille Martinez, who performed in the Broadway Asia Tour of The King & I and was the assistant choreographer on Cinderella, has created some of the most dynamic dances I have seen on a musical theater stage. Gino Gonzales has designed a colorful parade of costumes and sets that evoke a stylized circle and stripes version of the era. Shoko Matsumoto textures the stage with her clever lighting design, and vocal coach ManMan Angsico brings his ear for detail and precision to a demanding vocal score.

I am also thrilled to welcome back music director Archie Castillo, who is now based in the US. Archie and I worked together in the concert scene years ago and it is great to have him back in Manila. He will be conducting one of our country's most distinguished orchestras, FILharmoniKA. Thanks to Gerard and DJ Salonga, Hairspray will have world-class musicians playing the original Tony Award nominated Orchestrations. Gerard and DJ truly understand the needs (and limitations) of the Philippine theatrical scene and I am grateful for their support.

As we approach our 10th anniversary next year, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to those who have supported us throughout our close to 10-year journey. The Philippine STAR has been right by our side and supported our vision from the very beginning. It is a partnership I am proud and honored to be a part of. They are great benefactors of arts and culture in the Philippines, and for that I am extremely grateful. Pasay City and Makati City, where we do a lot of our musicals, have been very supportive of plays and musicals and have always welcomed our productions. FILharmoniKA, Crossover 105.1, MBC, Portfolio, MAC Cosmetics, TIGI Bed Head, HIT Productions, David and Goliath, Bench, Sennheiser, Video Gear, Gloria Jeans, Burger King, Chowking, Krispy Kreme, Superbowl, Yoshinoya, Senco Link, GSIS, Brooklyn Pizza, Capricciosa, Azul Restaurant, and Congo Grille have all been instrumental in their support in bringing Hairspray to Manila for the first time. To all of them, and to our loyal block buyers, I say a humble thank you.

One of the challenges most theater companies face here is the affordability (and availability) of venues. We are extremely fortunate to be performing for the first time at the Star Theatre in the CCP Complex, Pasay City. Usually the home of Ballet Manila, they have graciously welcomed us to their home for a month.

In recent months the worldwide economy has taken a tumble. Things look bleak. But I know they will get better. I learned that from Tracy Turnblad, Hairspray's 16-year-old heroine who is determined not to let circumstance dictate her future. She sets out to get the boy, become a star and integrate a TV Show. She reminds us, time and again, that we can all achieve our dreams regardless of size or color. And she does it all with a big smile on her face.

Hairspray is two and a half hours of musical comedy heaven! Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Mark O'Donnello and Thomas Meehan have created what will always be, to me, the most fun I have ever had sitting down. We hope you will join us at Hairspray as we bring you back in time to the '60s and celebrate the future artists of Philippine theater.

Multi Awarded Singer/Songwriter Nyoy Volante returns to his theatre roots when he plays Seaweed J. Stubbs in Atlantis Productions' highly anticipated staging of the Tony Award Winning Musical HAIRSPRAY which opens on November 14, 2008 at the Star Theatre, CCP Complex.

Nyoy recently released his fifth album, entitled Heartstrings with the carrier single BECAUSE. And although he has focused on his recording career for the last five years, Nyoy is thrilled to be returning to the legitimate stage in a show he truly loves.

Nyoy says, "When the film version of HAIRSPRAY came out, I was really impressed with the music and how unique the characters were. Naturally, when I found out Atlantis was doing a Manila Production, I wanted to be a part of it." Nyoy's last stage musical was five years ago in Atlantis' DREAMGIRLS, where he alternated with Jett Pangan as James Thunder Early.

Although his true passion is writing songs that come from straight from his heart, he has great respect for theatre artists and prides himself in having started out as a theatre actor. He says, "I hope everyone agrees with me when I say that the theatre arts' level of discipline is considered one of the highest among all the performing arts. And the training (from voice, to movement, to acting) is really, really hard. It's always a challenge and a test of stamina to do a show. And the fulfillment at the end of the day is tremendous."

One of the quirks of Tony award-winning musical Hairspray is its tradition of casting a male actor to play Edna Turnblad, the heavyweight mother of Tracy, a “pleasantly plump” teenager who dreams of being in the fictional Corny Collins Show. For Atlantis Productions’ take on Hairspray, veteran stage actor and showbiz icon Michael de Mesa is more than happy to take on the challenge of playing a woman.

FemaleNetwork got the chance to sit down with Michael during the rehearsals of Hairspray last week. Read on to know Michael’s preparations for his role as Edna, and what he thinks of high heels.

What are the challenges of this role, and what is your mindset in facing them?
Edna’s not a cross-dresser, she’s a woman. It’s a bit hard because there’s a thin line [between] men playing gay roles and real female roles. My foremost concern was, I did not want her to come out gay, because she’s a real woman, so you have that suspension of disbelief and the acceptance that the character is really played by a man. I’m working hard on that thin line of not making Edna look bakla, but babae and motherly.

How real would your Edna be?
Physically, of course, I’ll be wearing dresses, heels, and a fat suit, which I’m getting used to. With the voice, so far, so good—with Edna it’s more of building the character than singing, not like the rest of the cast, who really have to sing.

What do you feel about wearing heels? Do you empathize with women now that you’ve experienced it?
Okay lang, no problem with me. But I have blisters already, so I have to wear them more—but not in real life, ha. Now I understand that it’s hard to carry big boobs, too.

Did you like the recent Hairspray film?
I enjoyed it so much. In fact, after watching John Travolta play Edna, I told director Bobby Garcia, “Hmm, we should do Hairspray.” When he got the rights last year, he texted me, “Michael, we’re doing Hairspray and I want you to play Edna.” I said, “Yay!”

Are you looking forward to singing “You’re Timeless to Me”?
Yes. It’s a showstopper, not in the sense that it’s all-out, but it’s such a sincere song that shows how much Wilbur and Edna love each other, why their family is like this, why Tracy is so loveable. When you watch it, nakakakilig siya, it’s very cute.

What can you say about newcomer Madel Ching (who plays Tracy)?
She’s very jolly, very cheerful, very likeable, very talented. The way she dances, the way she moves, it’s unbelievable.

Atlantis Productions' highly-anticipated production of the Tony award-winning musical Hairspray has found its two lead stars, Tim Espinosa and Madel Ching who will play the highly-coveted roles of Link Larkin and Tracy Turnblad.

Like most Tracy Turnblads before her, Madel will be making her professional stage debut in Hairspray. She is a junior at Ateneo de Manila majoring in AB Political Science. Having performed in school productions including High School Musical. Madel is thrilled to take on her first major role. She says, "Girls like me don't get opportunities like this! Honestly, I feel like I'm the modern-day Filipina version of Tracy. A big girl with big dreams. It's a little scary to take on a role this big, but I'm really looking forward to taking on the challenge of playing a character with this much spirit and energy!"

Madel fully understands the discipline needed to take on a role like Tracy, so she continues her regular voice classes with Cynthia Guico and will also be taking dance classes to build up stamina for the role.

Tim takes on the role of heartthrob Link Larkin, made famous in the film by Zach Efron. Tim has been seen on ABS-CBN as a singer, dancer and actor and will also be making his professional stage debut. Tim says, "I am thrilled about everything. Hairspray entails singing, acting and dancing. I can't wait to do all three at the same time! I'm sure it will be fun from start to finish."

Tim's dreams for the future include making films and possibly a recording. He says, "I'd love to be in a movie someday, make my own music album one day, win an Oscar, own a home. Or if none of those happen, I want to take a ride in the dryer!"

Dulce, one of the country’s finest and most awarded singers, marks her 30th year in the business by returning to the musical theater stage in Atlantis Productions’ staging of the Tony Award winning musical Hairspray.

Dulce, who began her career in 1978, last appeared on stage several years ago in the first run of Himala The Musical. She was thrilled when she received a call from Hairspray director Bobby Garcia asking her if she would be interested to play Motormouth Maybelle, the role made famous in the film by Queen Latifah.

Bobby, who is directing the Broadway Asia tour of Cinderella, says, “I never dreamed she would say yes, but I had to try. You make a list in your head of the people you someday hope to work with, and Dulce has always been on top of mine.”

Dulce, who has spent the last few years focusing on her ministry work, admits though she was not too familiar with Hairspray when she got the offer. But when her children told her all about it with great excitement she was convinced that it would be perfect for her.

She thinks Maybelle is the perfect role for her at this point in her life and shares the sentiments of her Act Two showstopper song I Know Where I’ve Been. Dulce says she is looking forward to working with so many new people, as well as fellow performers she has not worked with for some time. She says, “I’m actually a very shy person, so I’m looking forward to being in a room with people I don’t know too well and collaborating with them. It will force me to overcome my shyness. Plus the sense of accomplishment in working with others to put on a show is really special.”

A winner of 8 Tony Awards including BEST MUSICAL, Hairspray is set to stage in Manila, following a hugely successful run in Broadway and London's West End.

Based on the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, with a book by Mark O'Donnel and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Hairspray follows the fortunes, or misfortunes, of the heavy-set Tracy Turnblad, who is determined to become a star dancer on the Corny Collins TV pop show.

In 2007, Hairspray was remade into a musical film starring John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Michelle Pfeiffer as Velma Von Tussle, Queen Latifah as "Motormouth" Maybelle and introducing Nikki Blonsky as the pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad.

Hairspray is based upon the New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, with a book by Mark O'Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Hairspray is directed by Jack O'Brien and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell.

In Hairspray it's 1962 - the '50s are out and change is in the air. Baltimore's Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion--to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, "The Corny Collins Show" and, overnight, is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity. But can a trendsetter in dance and fashion vanquish the program's reigning princess, win the heart of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a television show without denting her 'do? Only in Hairspray! Welcome to the '60s!

The musical features an original score by Marc Shaiman (who co-wrote the music and lyrics for the acclaimed animated musical, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and Scott Wittman. Their songs take Tracy from the soundstage of a 60's-style dance show to the streets of Baltimore to a downtown rhythm and blues record shop.

Hairspray, according to BroadwayWorld, won “every major Best Musical award, including [eight] Tony [awards], [the] New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk Award, and the Outer Critics Circle Award” during the theater season that it opened on Broadway in 2002. Its Broadway run will close on January 4, 2009.

Reviews of Hairspray's different performances have been good. Aside from a few rants on the acting of individual actors, critics have had nothing but raves for this unique play. With two movie versions and numerous stage productions, that is no mean feat.

The musical was originally based on a 1988 movie by John Waters. According to Pegasus News, it has two gimmicks: lead Tracy Turnblad has to be played by “an unknown who has never really done much professional theatre: ideally a complete amateur” and Tracy's mother has to be “played by a man.”

In 2007, a film version of the musical was released. It had a stellar cast including John Travolta (Edna), Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, Zac Efron, James Marsden and Queen Latifah. Nikki Blonsky was the “unknown” who snagged the role of Tracy.

Hairspray tells the story of “pleasantly plump” teenager Tracy Turnblad, who has hopes to be part of a dance show on television. She lands a spot on the program and, BroadwayWorld says, “is transformed [overnight] from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.”

The play isn't only about dancing. It tackles issues of discrimination and acceptance in a world where to some people, prejudice comes as naturally as breathing.

It is the late 1960s in Baltimore, United States, and the Corny Collins Show is the hottest program on air, where “all the nicest kids” go. Blacks are allowed on the set only during “Negro Day,” except for singer Motormouth Maybelle, who sometimes serves as a co-host to the show's namesake and host, Corny Collins.

The show features a group of talented teenagers, which Tracy becomes a part of when she blows everyone away during an audition. Tracy, through her open-mindedness and determination to be taken seriously despite traits that some take against her, becomes the catalyst for major changes not only on the Corny Collins show but in Baltimore as well.

On October 26, director Bobby Garcia wrote in a Philippine Star article that he “jumped at the chance” to get the Manila rights for Hairspray when Broadway Asia offered it to him. Though he had reservations due to the difficulty of finding a good cast, he went ahead with the Manila version of the play, anyway.

Auditions for the play took place in April for the role of Tracy and other minor roles. For the major parts, Garcia said, he got in touch with actors he had previously worked with.

The final cast features various heavyweights (no pun intended) in the Philippine theater and entertainment industries , such as Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo (Velma Von Tussle), Nyoy Volante (Seaweed J. Stubbs), Dulce (Motormouth Maybelle), Leo Rialp (Wilbur Turnblad) and Michael de Mesa.

De Mesa will play Tracy's mother Edna, a role which the veteran actor admits has been very difficult for him. “Edna's not a cross-dresser. She's a woman. It's a bit hard because there's a thin line [between] men playing gay roles and real female roles,” he told PEP in an interview. “I'm really working hard on that thin line of not making Edna look bakla (gay), but babae (female) and motherly.”

Newcomer Madel Ching will play Tracy and ABS-CBN Star Magic Batch 15 member Tim Espinosa will be Link Larkin, PEP said.
